Research and Planning:
While there are other baseball-themed ABC books, I envisioned this one with a distinct visual style and a limited color palette of just six colors. Designed as a sturdy board book, it’s perfect for young readers who love to explore with their hands (and sometimes teeth).
To begin, I brainstormed a list of baseball terms and phrases for each letter, narrowing it down to a final set. Moving into the thumbnail phase, I sketched out quick page concepts, focusing on layout and composition rather than detail. Once I was happy with the thumbnails, I worked on a color study for each page to ensure balance and cohesion across the book. The limited color palette helped unify the illustrations and create a visually engaging flow.
Design & Execution:
All artwork for My Baseball ABC Book was crafted using the Procreate app on an iPad. I chose a single custom brush with a texture that emulated oil paint on canvas, adding depth and natural imperfections to each page. Each illustration uses vibrant colors and lively characters to capture young readers' attention while helping them learn the alphabet and key aspects of baseball.
Outcome & Conclusion:
This project was an exciting journey in children’s book production, giving me a chance to push my creative boundaries while working independently. I’m proud of the final result, which balances playful design with a love of baseball. My hope is to get My Baseball ABC Book into the hands of baseball-loving families in time for the start of the next season.
