Introduction:

Mountain Outlaw magazine, published biannually in Big Sky, Montana, captures the essence of the Mountain West lifestyle and culture from the heart of the Yellowstone region. With captivating stories, exquisite design, and stunning photography, Mountain Outlaw offers readers an immersive experience beyond information.

Project Brief:

As the creative director for this edition, I led a team of graphic designers and writers to shape the magazine’s visual identity. I collaborated closely with the sales team to seamlessly integrate advertisements. The final product was distributed in print throughout the Bozeman/Yellowstone area and digitally via ISSUU.

Research and Inspiration:

The magazine’s luxury aesthetic drew inspiration from influential publications like National Geographic and Wired for Adventure, which excel in visual storytelling and narrative depth. This project was both a creative and professional challenge, motivating me to push my skills as a designer and leader to new heights.

Design Execution:

Coordinating this publication’s intricate elements required a detailed organizational approach. I personally designed key layouts, including the cover and cover story, while managing the team’s work on other sections. I collaborated with the sales team to ensure that local advertisements fit smoothly into the design. Through several rounds of proof checks and editorial revisions—overseen by myself, the editor, and our content producer—we refined the magazine to a polished final product. After final adjustments, the issue was printed and widely distributed in the Bozeman and Big Sky areas.

Outcome and Analysis:

This project was a significant undertaking that provided invaluable lessons in project management, layout design, and team leadership. Organization was essential to balance the complexities of a large-scale publication. I learned to delegate effectively, empowering team members to bring their creativity to the publication’s vision. This issue stands as a milestone in my career and a testament to the dedication of our team.

Conclusion:

Achieving my goal of serving as creative director for a magazine has been incredibly fulfilling. This experience exceeded my expectations, leaving me with valuable knowledge, professional growth, and pride in our collective accomplishment.
