Introduction:

Between 2012 and 2016, California faced an extreme drought. In response, the Long Beach Water Department worked diligently to promote water conservation and help protect the community’s water resources.

Project Brief:

Produce a 1-minute public service announcement (PSA) film underscoring the importance of conserving water.

Research and Inspiration:

The Long Beach Water Department has made notable progress in conservation efforts since the drought. In 2013, during the Halloween season, I collaborated with them on a short film about water conservation within the home. Research indicated that bathrooms, especially showers, are primary sources of water waste. Inspired by the classic shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, I suggested a playful shot-for-shot remake featuring me and the department’s mascot, Conservin' Mervyn. As a film enthusiast, I thoroughly studied the original scene to capture its iconic atmosphere.

Design Execution:

After finalizing storyboards, I filmed the PSA over a few hours, using pre-planned shots to streamline production. Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, I applied a black-and-white filter to evoke a classic horror vibe. Drawing on my background in music, I composed an eerie soundtrack to enhance the suspense. Finally, I created the closing message, "DON'T KILL THE WATER SUPPLY," in Adobe Illustrator and integrated it into the credits.

Outcome and Analysis:

The short film aired in Long Beach cinemas throughout the Halloween season. This creative approach helped the Long Beach Water Department engage the public on water conservation, contributing to Long Beach’s reputation as one of California’s most water-conscious cities.

Conclusion:

This project is among my favorites, as it allowed me to bring a creative vision to life with the full support of the Long Beach Water Department. Playing multiple roles, from concept to execution, was a highly rewarding experience—and it’s a reminder to keep my own showers short, just in case Conservin' Mervyn is watching!
