Introduction:

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted communities worldwide in profound ways. As the Digital Communications Specialist for the County of Orange, I developed numerous graphics and informational assets to keep the public updated on shifting protocols. Additionally, I used my illustration skills to create light-hearted, hopeful visuals that kept the tone positive and engaging.

Informative Infographics

My primary objective as a designer was to convey crucial information visually, even in the absence of text. Each social media graphic delivered key messages, such as the importance of mask-wearing, handwashing, and social distancing, using simple, clear visuals. For example, illustrations of masked figures were widely used to reinforce the message about face coverings. Each image was crafted to ensure that the public could easily understand the intended health guidance, regardless of age or language.

Illustrations that Speak Volumes

Drawing inspiration from children's picture books and mid-century artwork, I aimed to reach younger audiences and keep the tone approachable. One memorable illustration depicted a boxing match between a bar of soap and a COVID virus particle, with the soap triumphantly knocking out the virus. Paired with the tagline, "KNOCKOUT CORONAVIRUS BY WASHING YOUR HANDS," this image delivered the message in a way that was simple, memorable, and enjoyable for viewers of all ages.

Conclusion:

In times of crisis, innovative communication is essential to keep morale high and foster a sense of unity. This creative approach to public health messaging not only kept spirits up but also empowered people to play a role in stopping the spread of the virus. Reaching audiences of all ages and backgrounds is critical in any public health campaign, and I’m grateful to have contributed to these efforts in an impactful way.
